Lenses
Our night lights have two main parts:
- A box with a slotted lid (Stage)
- Engraved acrylic designs (Lenses)
Night Light Diagram
The stage is comprised of a base and a lid:
- The wooden base is a box that holds an LED light inside.
- The lid holds engraved designs (acrylic lenses) on top and has two layers:
- Slotted wooden topper
- Clear acrylic platform
- The lid topper and platform are held together with binding screws (that we refer to as lid connectors).
The Stage
We engrave designs into clear acrylic and then cut out the engraved designs. We refer to the cutout designs as acrylic “lenses.”

A Night Light
Acrylic Lenses
The lenses are engraved acrylic designs (pictures) that slide into slots on top of the night light box (stage).
From within the stage, an LED light shines upward through the slots, highlighting the engraved designs on the lenses – this effect creates a beautiful illumination in the form of a night light.
Lenses come in different shapes and sizes.
Lens Types
Backdrop Lenses
Lenses come in different shapes and sizes.
Backdrop lenses span most or all of the width of the stage. They create the main setting for the scene.
Different stage sizes hold different size backdrops. Token stages can hold Petite size lenses or smaller. Core stages can Standard size backdrops, and can expand to hold larger backdrops and small backdrops simultaneously.
Accent Lenses
Accent lenses are smaller pieces that add detail within the scene.
They are often placed in front of backdrop lenses to add characters, objects, or foreground elements.
Lens Frame Styles
Below are examples of common lens styles.
Dome
The cut line forms an arch across the top.

Dome Panorama
Still a dome, but the cut is wider than it is tall, creating a broad scene.

Outline
The cut follows the shape of the design.

Painting the Lenses
Painting the lenses adds depth and definition. Color helps each element stand out instead of blending into the other lenses when left clear.
Mix and match boxes and lenses. Choose the combination that creates the scene you want.
